TYPES OF DASHBOARDS
Most dashboards fail because they try to do 3 jobs at once.
In practice, strong reporting is built in three layers, each with a different purpose:
1) High-Level Dashboard (Executive Dashboard)
Purpose: fast decisions, fast alignment
Audience: CEO/Board/GM
Cadence: Monthly/Quarterly.....
What it shows: 6–10 KPIs only (Revenue, Gross Margin, Cash, AR, Runway, Utilization at a Strategic Level)
Best visuals: KPI cards + trend lines + traffic lights
✅ Output: “Are we on track? What needs attention this period?”
2) Analytical Dashboard (Performance & Drivers)
Purpose: explain “why” performance moved
Audience: CFO/COO/Dept heads
Cadence: weekly/monthly
What it shows: drivers and variance (Price/Volume/Mix, cost breakdown, productivity, funnel conversion)
Best visuals: waterfall (bridge), variance tables, contribution charts, cohort/segmentation
✅ Output: “What caused the result and what lever do we pull next?”
3) Exploratory Dashboard (Discovery & Deep Dive)
Purpose: investigate unknowns and find patterns
Audience: analysts, strategy, operational improvement
Cadence: ad-hoc/weekly/monthly
What it shows: interactive slicing (region, product, channel, customer type, batch, etc.)
Best visuals: filters, drill-downs, scatter plots, correlation views, pivot exploration
✅ Output: “Where are the hidden opportunities or risks?”
Rule:
Don’t force one dashboard to do all three.
Build a system: Executive → Analytical → Exploratory.
